Warm alpenglow catches jagged snow-covered peaks along the northern edge of the Chugach Mountains at sunset, viewed across the Matanuska Valley from the Glenn Highway. This stretch of the highway runs along the northern flank of the Chugach between the Talkeetna Mountains and Wrangell-St. Elias, and in the right conditions the upper ridges light up for only a few minutes before the color drops off. The Chugach are a relatively young coastal range with significant glaciation, and the mix of rock, ice, and open farmland in the Matanuska Valley below is one of the defining drives in Southcentral Alaska.
