An Andean condor soars high above the windswept tundra of Patagonia, its broad wings catching the thermals rising from the rugged terrain below. With its striking black-and-white plumage and massive wingspan, the condor is a defining presence in the skies of South America’s southern reaches.

This image captures the bird mid-flight as it patrols the open expanses near the Andes, where cliffs and plateaus offer ideal nesting and roosting sites. The sparse, golden tundra beneath highlights the vastness of the Patagonian landscape, adding to the sense of scale and solitude.

The Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) plays a vital ecological role in these environments as a scavenger, helping maintain the health of the ecosystem. Its silhouette against the open sky makes for a timeless wildlife photo grounded in place and purpose.

Scientific name is Vultur gryphus. Photo © copyright by Carl Donohue.
