Polar bear family in a blizzard photo
Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
A female polar bear leads her two young cubs through a blizzard on the Arctic coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Snow is falling hard, driven sideways by wind, and all three bears are dusted white. The mother is mid stride, glancing back toward the camera while the cubs press close to her sides. One cub looks directly at the lens.
Polar bear families like this one are vulnerable during their first year together. The cubs, born in a snow den the previous winter, are still learning to navigate the harsh conditions of the Arctic coast. The mother does all the work, finding food, choosing routes, and shielding them from threats. A heavy snowstorm like this one makes those challenges visible in a way that calm weather photos do not. You can see the effort in her posture and the way the cubs tuck in tight against her body for warmth and protection.
Photographing a polar bear family in a blizzard in ANWR requires patience and a willingness to sit through terrible conditions. Visibility drops to almost nothing, the wind cuts hard, and the bears can disappear into the whiteout in seconds. But these are the moments that tell the real story of what life is like for polar bears on Alaska's Arctic coast, and the images that come out of weather like this carry a weight and atmosphere that bluebird days simply cannot match.
