Fireweed Along Resurrection Creek, Chugach National Forest
Resurrection Creek, Resurrection Pass Trail, Chugach National Forest
Common fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium) blooms along the banks of Resurrection Creek near the town of Hope on the Resurrection Pass Trail. Fireweed is one of Alaska's defining mid-summer wildflowers; the blooms start at the bottom of the stalk and work upward, and the Alaska folk saying is that when the top blossoms open, summer is six weeks from being over. The Resurrection Pass Trail runs about 38 miles through the Chugach National Forest between Hope and Cooper Landing on the Kenai Peninsula. It is one of the more popular long-distance hikes in Southcentral Alaska and the lower creek sections below Hope are especially good for summer wildflower work.
