Brown Bear Chasing Salmon in River, Katmai
Katmai National Park and Preserve
A brown bear runs at full speed through a shallow river in pursuit of a salmon, water flying in all directions. Successful fishing bears in Katmai rely on a mix of stationary ambush and these explosive chases. A lot depends on whether the fish has already sorted out where the channel drops out ahead of it. The river corridors of Katmai are one of the best places on earth to watch this cycle play out in the open, with the bears, the salmon, and the landscape all essentially unchanged from the way they would have been thousands of years ago.
