Andean condor in flight
Patagonia
Sweeping effortlessly above the open tundra, an Andean condor glides across the Patagonian sky. Patagonia’s dramatic terrain provides perfect conditions for these massive birds, with constant winds and wide, empty horizons that match the condor’s far-reaching range.
This photo shows the condor isolated in the frame, with a view of the tundra stretching endlessly below. The simplicity of the background draws attention to the bird's form — powerful, aerodynamic, and almost prehistoric in presence.
Seen in places like Torres del Paine National Park and other remote regions of Chile and Argentina, the Andean condor remains one of the continent’s most iconic raptors. Its presence here speaks to the health and openness of these untamed southern ecosystems.
Scientific name is Vultur gryphus. Photo © copyright by Carl Donohue.
