A brown bear walks across open tundra in warm rim light at the end of the day in Katmai. The dropped sun picks out the long tips of the coat and separates the animal cleanly from the shadowed ground behind it. On the right evening, late light in Katmai turns ordinary bear movement into something closer to a stage-lit frame. Alaska's extreme northern latitudes give you a long window of low, raking light in summer and fall, and in places with consistent wildlife like this one, that light is a real part of the reason to be here.
