Pink and Green Aurora Above Spruce-Lined Ridge
Interior Alaska
Green and pink aurora borealis curtains rise above a low spruce-lined ridge on fresh snow. The pink color along the bottom of the curtains comes from nitrogen emission in the lower part of the auroral layer, and it usually means the incoming particles are punching down to a relatively denser part of the atmosphere. It is not always visible even on a good aurora night. The combination of active auroral color, fresh snow, and a simple ridge line is about as clean as this kind of landscape shot gets in Interior Alaska in the middle of winter. Aurora borealis, Alaska.
