In the heart of Patagonia, a lone guanaco pauses on the tundra, framed by the towering spires of Torres del Paine in the distance. With its slender frame and soft, tawny fur, the guanaco is perfectly suited for the windswept steppes and rugged valleys of southern Chile. These wild relatives of llamas are an essential part of the region’s ecosystem, serving as prey for apex predators like the elusive puma.

Torres del Paine’s dramatic mountains and expansive grasslands create an unforgettable setting for wildlife photography. Guanacos, often seen in small herds or standing alone, embody the resilience needed to survive Patagonia’s challenging climate. This image highlights the raw beauty and remote grandeur that define one of South America's most iconic landscapes.

Scientific name is Llama guanicoe. Photo © copyright by Carl Donohue.
