Green vertical aurora columns are wrapped in rare red aurora above a snow-covered valley in the Brooks Range. Red aurora comes from oxygen emissions much higher in the atmosphere, around 150 to 250 miles up, and only shows up during stronger geomagnetic activity. Catching clean red alongside the usual green is a sign of a solid storm night. The northern arctic foothills of Alaska are one of the best places on the planet to see displays like this with a real landscape underneath instead of city lights or atmospheric haze.
