Female mountain lion stalks a ridgeline
Patagonia
Captured in the heart of Chilean Patagonia, this photograph shows a female puma traversing a windswept ridge in search of food. With her tawny coat blending into the dry grasses of the tundra, she remains a shadow on the landscape—seen only if she chooses to be.
As the top predator in the region, the puma plays a vital role in the ecosystem. Her presence regulates prey populations like guanacos and helps maintain ecological balance across the steppe.
Every step she takes reflects a mix of caution and confidence, learned through years of survival in Patagonia’s challenging wilderness. This photo offers a window into the daily life of one of South America's most powerful and graceful carnivores.
Scientific name is Puma concolor. Photo © copyright by Carl Donohue.
