A large brown bear walks through shallow river water in Katmai, glancing back over its shoulder. Bears along the river corridors here constantly monitor each other; a look back usually means another bear is in play somewhere upstream or along the bank, or a fresh salmon has been spotted. Getting the profile with a head-turn like this is a moment of body language rather than pure action, and it is one of the things that makes time spent with these bears worth the trip.
