Aurora Over Snow-Covered Hills and Spruce

A green aurora borealis band climbs above snow-covered rolling hills with scattered spruce in the foreground. Fresh snow on the ground adds a quiet ambient reflected light to an aurora scene and makes the foreground readable without a separate light source. On a dark winter night in Interior Alaska this is the cleanest way to work a display with landscape. A lot of aurora photography ends up being about picking ground; the sky is the sky, but the real difference between frames is whether there is something worth standing on underneath.
