Green curtains of aurora borealis unroll across the sky above a group of photographers and their van parked along the Dalton Highway in the Brooks Range foothills. Winter is the season for reliable aurora in Interior Alaska because the long dark hours give time for displays to build and move, and the cold, dry air keeps the sky clear. Working the aurora from a road-accessible pullout like this is common on photo workshops.
