The Gilahina Trestle is a landmark structure along the McCarthy Road, in Wrangell - St. Elias National Park and Preserve. Black and white photo, Wintertime, Gilahina trestle, or bridge, Wrangell - St. Elias National Park, Alaska. The Gilahina trestle, a wooden structure was originally 890 feet long and 90 feet high; half a million board feet of timber were used, and construction was completed in eight days in the winter of 1911. Over 15% of the entire railway (what is now 60 miles of the McCarthy Road) was built on trestles.

The blue in the ice is a result of the ice absorbing the red end of the light spectrum - generally a sign of deeper ice - as light penetrates the ice, the further it goes, the more of the red of the spectrum is absorbed, so we see 'blue'.
