A snowshoe hare in Denali National Park, Alaska. Snowshoe hares are named for their rather (relatively) large feet - all the better to help them travel over snow. The snowshoe hare is also called the varying hare, because they change coats in the winter to a white pelage in the winter, though the hairs are dark at the base. The tips of the ears stay dark year round. Snowshoe hare, Denali National Park, Alaska. (Lepus americanus)
