Winter Blues

Snow covered rocks on the Kennecott River, winter, Wrangell St. Elias National Park, Alaska.

Hey Folks,

Here’s an image I shot earlier this winter. The snow covered rocks, backlit, caught my attention, and I made a few images before hiking back to the shack. This one I’m unsure about, and would be glad to hear any opinions on how you feel about it. If you click on the image, a larger version should open up in a new window for you.

Thanks.

Cheers

Carl

The thin slice of distant background at the top is interesting Carl. It does leave you with wanting to see more. It is quite cool the way the rock mounds form an s-shape into the image and get progressively smaller. Quite dynamic.

    Hey Mark,

Thanks for the thoughts. It’s amazing how differently this scene might appear in the summer, with no snow; they’re just a big ole glacier and river rocks piled on one another .. not so photogenic at all. But a nice dump of snow on them, and some light, and the place transcends. I’m gunna try to get some more images from this area soon, and see how it goes.

Thanks again – hope all’s well with you.

    Cheers

  3. Hey Carl,

It sure doesn’t look like that in the summer! It is great you have been able to capture these locations in the different seasons.

    Hey Ron,

Yeah, it’s wild, isn’t it? This is down towards the south end of the River, near the Nizina. I’ve never taken a photo of the Kennecott in summer, it’s such a nasty brown dirty river – and those rocks just don’t grab the camera so well. In the spring and fall, the river, at low levels, is the most perfectly clear aqua blue water you’ll see anywhere – I saw Trumpeter swans on it last spring. Crazy, eh?

    Cheers

    Carl
