Spruce trees grow on top of the Malaspina Glacier. The layer of soil between the surface of the ground and the ice is merely 12″ thick, yet an entire spruce forest is able to grow here. Malaspina Glacier is a tidewater glacier in Wrangell – St. Elias National Park and Preserve, Alaska.
