Wrangell St. Elias photos: Kennicott photo, the small historic mining town of Kennicott, covered in snow on a winter morning. Acquired by the National Park Service in 1998, Kennicott was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1978. The National Park Service is currently renovating and restoring the buildings of Kennicott. Kennicott Copper Corporation operated their Kennicott copper mines here from 1911 until they closed down operations in 1938.
