2 young polar bears (Ursus maritimus) playing on the snow near Kaktovik, Barter Island, Alaska. Subadult polar bears are typically not aggressive toward one another, and play frequently when they run across each other. In the Southern Beaufort Sea, in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, polar bears often congregate near Barter Island in the fall awaiting freeze-up conditions.
