Male polar bears are known as boars. This magnificent male polar bear approached me with no fear whatsoever, just a curiosity as to quite what I might be doing. Polar bear (Ursus maritimus) male walking on fresh snow, waiting for freezeup in the arctic. Many polars come on shore in the arctic for the summer, before returning to the sea ice pack of the Arctic Ocean for the long winter. Adult male polar bear, or boar, Ursus maritimus, Beaufort Sea, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska.
