Welcome to my photo tour page
Carl Donohue and Expeditions Alaska offer a diverse and exciting mix of photography trips. With a wealth of guiding experience, leading both backcountry tours and front country trips, these photo tours are productive and helpful process for your photography.
These tours have been extremely popular, for both professional and amateur photographers alike. Each photo tour is tailored to provide you both valuable field experience and the opportunity to access locations and settings you might otherwise not.
These are photography tours designed by a photographer, for serious photographers looking to develop their own portfolios. We go the extra mile to be in the best places at the best time. Scheduling is everything, so these tours are designed to make sure you're in the right place, at the best time, every time.
There's no substitute for local knowledge; knowing your subject is invaluable. You wouldn't take your car to a dentist, so why take an Alaska photo tour with someone from Florida? You won't beat taking an Alaska photo tour with someone who lives in Alaska. If you want the best in Alaska photo tours, go with an Alaska Photo Tour outfit.
A smaller group size means your photo trip is YOUR trip. You don't want to come all this way to Alaska and then spend your time vying with other folks for the optimum opportunities. I can take care of your planning, and you take care of your photography.
These all inclusive photo tours, whether back country or front country, cover all your transport and accommodations. I'm now adding a number of photo tours that I think are both exciting and unique, to give photographers an opportunity to photograph Alaska above and beyond what the standard photo tours offer.
For more information about my work as a guide, as well as comprehensive outlines of each of the trips visit my guiding website, Expeditions Alaska. Currently booking tours for 2017, and working hard to add a few new ones as well; so stay in touch via email, or subscribe to the blog for updates.
Back in 2017 Bald Eagle Photo Tour and workshop to Haines, Alaska, in November 2017.
Also in October 2017 I'll be returning to Arctic Alaska to photograph Nanuq, the great polar bear of the north. This is a fantastic and unique opportunity to get up close and personal with Ursus maritimus, the polar bear. What other polar bear photo tour offers the chance to get eye to eye with polar bears in such a small group (max 4 participants)? Answer = None. Details for the polar bear tour here.
Have a look at this brand new exploratory trip, a 6 night cruise of Alaska's Katmai National Park coast, photographing coastal brown bears in Hallo Bay, Kukak Bay and Geographic Harbor. We charter Chuck Keim's Coastal Explorer, a 30' schooner, and explore this breathtaking region. With this first class accommodations and food, we have access to brown bears by the dozen; nesting bald eagles and stupendous Alaska scenic backdrops will make this a superb photo tour, and I'm both glad and proud to be working with Chuck on this. Alaska Wildlife Photo Tours
Grizzly bear photo tour
This photo tour is extremely popular. Few things are as exciting as a week, or 2 weeks, living in the world of The Great Bear. We camp in a secluded and quiet campground, with wooden shelters to eat and rest inside, enjoy great food, solitude, campfires and upward of 75 bears in the immediate area.
We'll basecamp and dayhike each day, though you're welcome to spend an afternoon or morning in camp if you'd rather. The camp has an electric fence surrounding it, so it's a relaxed environment.
The magnificent landscape around us provides a a stunning backdrop for great grizzly bear photography.
All inclusive trip; your tour departs out of King Salmon, Alaska, includes an air taxi charter in to and out of our camp, all the food you could want to eat, comfortable camping accommodations, and the experience and guidance of wildlife photographer Carl Donohue.
For a comprehensive overview of this trip, look at the Grizzly bears in the Fall Photo Tours page.
Alaska Landscape Photo Tours
Aurora borealis photo tourThis trip will run in the Alaskan spring, March and April generally being the best Aurora borealis viewing time. We will meet and stay in Fairbanks, Alaska, the best central and flexible place in Alaska for aurora borealis photography.
We'll be able to travel in virtually any direction, looking for clear skies and big aurora displays. Weather permitting, you'll also have the opportunity to photograph some fantastic winter landscape and scenic photography.
Accommodation and travel in and around Fairbanks included.

Skolai Pass, Wrangell - St. Elias National Park
Skolai Pass, Wrangell - St. Elias National Park, is really one of the great landscape photography locations in the country. This is a backcountry trip, we'll be camping, hiking and exploring one of my very favorite places on the planet., Skolai Pass.
Although this is a backcountry trip, it's extremely flexible, and tailored to your experience and interests. The tour can be as adventurous and strenuous or as mild and simple as you want it to be.
Dates: August - Sept is a great time for photography here, but really any time in the summer works just fine. The light in Skolai Pass in July can be simply sublime.
Itinerary: I pick you up at your hotel in Anchorage, and all your transport is taken care of until you're dropped back at your hotel in Anchorage at the end of the trip. 2 nights accommodation in McCarthy, your air taxi charter and all guide services included.
